NFL WRITE-UP

Monday, December 21

Giants (7-6) @ Redskins (4-9)-- Big Blue lost six of last eight games, allowing average of 32.4 ppg; they've given up 31 TDs on opponents' last 90 drives; in season opener, Giants (-6.5) beat Redskins 23-17, with Manning averaging a hefty 8.3 yds/pass attempt. Redskins covered last five games (2-3 SU); their last three losses are by 1-3-3 points. Skins are 3-3 at home, with the dog 5-1 vs spread in those games. Six of last seven Washington games went over total, as have nine of 13 Giant games. Underdog is 8-2 vs spread in NFC East tilts this season, road teams are also 8-2.

REDSKINS (+3) over Giants
Kinda like the roll that Washington is on, and not the roll New York is on. The Redskins are working on a fabulous 5-0 spread run, while the Giants have covered only one of the last eight. Also don't like the fact that New York's defense has become low-end Swiss cheese, allowing a staggering total of 126 points (31 points per game) in the four games since the bye week.

RANDALL THE HANDLE'S NFL SELECTION

Giants @ Redskins
Line: NY Giants by 3

Redskins could be weary from heavy travel while the Giants have remained in the neighbourhood. G-men have struggled on special teams and pass defence recently but this foe does not provide much adversity in either area.

$600.00 Take #331 New York Giants (-3) over Washington (8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 21)
This is part of the 99 system. The Giants have owned this series recently and have won six of the last seven meetings. And of all of those games that they have won none were closer than six points. Washington has covered some spreads but they are still just 2-7 SU in their last nine games. This is another team that doesn’t have anything to play for and I think that the Giants will continue to play hard. The favorite is 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings and Giants are 22-7 ATS in road games.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets

Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers (-2.5, 202.5)

The Bucks are going to have to get better production from their two highest-paid players if they’re going to make the playoffs in 2010.

Two guard Michael Redd is shooting just 38 percent from the field and 27 percent from 3-point land since coming back from injury. Making matters worse, franchise center Andrew Bogut went ice cold in the second half of Saturday’s game against the Kings.

The big pivot is struggling to find any type of chemistry with first-year point guard Brandon Jennings.

Bogut won’t find things any easier on Monday. Pacers center Roy Hibbert is capable of coming up with big defensive efforts like his six-block showing Saturday against the Spurs.

Pick: Pacers

Utah Jazz at Orlando Magic (-7.5, 203.5)

Macin Gorat must be pissed. The long-time Orlando role player impressed during the club's postseason run last season. Dallas offered the big man a fat contract, but the Magic surprisingly matched the proposal. Now Gorat is the highest paid backup center and playing garbage minutes most nights.

Orlando hoped they could play Gorat next to All-Star Dwight Howard, but the pairing hasn't worked out in coach Stan Van Gundy's eyes.

Gorat isn't the only big man wasting away on the Magic's bench. Power forward Brandon Bass, who was signed to a healthy contract in the offseason, is lucky to get 10 minutes of play every other game.

Van Gundy's rotation pattern could end up hurting him. Howard is playing big minutes and could tire down the stretch. Also, when Howard gets in foul trouble, Gorat and Bass don't play with the same confidence they showed last season.

Could be a nice edge for Utah. The Jazz will try to attack Howard early on with bruising forwards Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap.

Pick: Jazz

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes (110, 5.5)

Are the Rangers starting to turn a corner? After going 7-15-3 over a 25-game stretch, the Blueshirts have put together back-to-back wins.

Coach John Tortorella is getting the credit for the recent surge after benching defenseman Wade Redden and demoting Chris Drury to the fourth line following a 2-1 loss to the Islanders.

Drury got the message loud and clear. The team captain registered a goal in each of the last two games despite playing minimal minutes with the checking line.

Don’t go crazy buying the Rangers just yet. The club has been outshot 102-72 in its last three games. Goalie Henrik Lunqvist has had to bail out his teammates consistently this season.

Expect a higher scoring game Monday against the ‘Canes.

Pick: Over

Columbus Blue Jackets at Phoenix Coyotes (-155, 5.5)

Hockey fans in Columbus haven’t had much to cheer about this season. The Blue Jackets are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and have just two wins over their last 16 games.

Goalie Steve Mason is going through a sophomore slump and his teammates aren’t giving him much goal support. Columbus has just eight goals over its last five games.

Fans are crying for change even though this team made the playoffs just last season. Whispers are swirling about coach Ken Hitchcock getting the axe, Rick Nash being stripped of the captaincy and maybe even a major trade.

None of those changes will happen before Monday’s game against the Coyotes, but Mason will sit in favor of backup Mathieu Garon. That should be enough for the Jackets to snap their losing streak.

Pick: Blue Jackets
